Not the most efficient use of points. My partner and I travelled to Melbourne recently. And just like we try to do with long haul flights, we booked my flights using points and we split the cost of his flights that we paid with cash. Returning from the US in early January, the high season also meant high prices. We decided in late September to head to the US for New Years, to catch up with some friends in Los Angeles. And then head up to Portland in Oregon to see their home. We normally book long haul flights closer to 10-11 months out, so booking so close meant fares were high. And there were certainly no reward seats available. Very comfortable way to get across the ditch. Qantas operates both it's standard B737 between Sydney and Auckland, as well as its more premium A330-300. On a recent long weekend getaway to New Zealand, I decided to try the Qantas A333 product on the way there, and Virgin B737 on the way back. I recently flew from Hong Kong to Boston as part of a trip from Australia to east coast USA. Finding award flights using Qantas or Velocity points direct to mainland USA is pretty difficult. I checked the Qantas website each day for about 4 weeks to keep an eye on award flights, and finally decided to connect through Dallas on to Sydney. Business class on American Airlines 772 to Dallas, then first class on the Qantas A380. It did seem a bit luxurious using so many points on first class, but you need to fly first class at some stage, and I'm not a fan of the Qantas A380...

Delta 717 first class is a narrow seat with limited food options. It's easy for Australians flying in the US to get excited when noticing they're booked in first class with Delta. A bit of a treat to have a mini business suite on a 90 minute flight. Qantas operates both it's standard B737 between Sydney and Melbourne, as well as its more premium A330-200.
